The Ocean Way music festival, which was scheduled to take place later this month in Santa Monica, California, has been canceled due to the storm and beach erosion. Waves reaching 4.5 meters and flooding have severely damaged the beach near Los Angeles, forcing local officials to cancel the event.
Impact of Storm Maria on California's Coast
A statement from the city of Santa Monica said: "The storm waves generated by Storm Maria and the runoff from sewage have eroded a large portion of the festival venue." This storm, influenced by a powerful El Niño, has caused significant damage to coastal areas from Malibu to Long Beach and Dana Point.

The Ocean Way festival, which was set to take place for the first time, was to feature artists such as The Killers, Olivia Dean, and Jack White. This festival was promoted by the organizers of the famous Coachella festival, Goldenvoice. Santa Monica Mayor Caroline Trussos stated: "The beach we had planned for this festival has been taken by the storm, and we cannot place tens of thousands of people on that sand until it is safe."
Consequences of the Storm for Residents and Infrastructure
Recently, news of the festival's cancellation coincided with the opening of a massive sinkhole in the driveway of a beach house owned by Oscar-winning actor Nicolas Cage. Officials in Malibu, located north of Santa Monica, ordered the evacuation of 31 homes due to the dangers posed by this sinkhole. Additionally, in Dana Point, at least seven homes were declared uninhabitable due to rapid beach erosion, and one house fell into the sea.
Similar problems have been observed in Laguna Beach. In recent weeks, the waters of the Pacific Ocean have been restless due to a series of tropical storms, some of which have turned into hurricanes. Scientists believe that El Niño, with near-record strength, is warming ocean waters and creating additional fluctuations. While this phenomenon is part of a natural cycle, climate changes caused by human activities have significantly increased heat and intensified its effects.
The Ocean Way festival is not the first festival to be affected by climate change. The Bonnaroo festival in Tennessee also announced last month that it would be canceled in 2027 due to land repairs. Additionally, the Stagecoach festival, which takes place at the same location as Coachella, was temporarily canceled this year due to strong winds.
