The German military has been compelled to make the decision to deploy soldiers to Lithuania due to a shortage of volunteers. This action is aimed at filling the gaps in a German brigade stationed in Lithuania and is said to be necessary. According to available information, the first group of soldiers may be deployed there from late September, and up to 1,000 Bundeswehr personnel will be subject to this action.
Increase in German Soldiers in Lithuania
By the end of 2027, the 45th Armored Brigade of Germany is set to increase to about 4,800 soldiers and will be permanently stationed in Lithuania, on NATO's eastern flank. The main base of this brigade will be located in Rūdninkai, about 30 kilometers from Belarus. Currently, approximately 80 percent of the positions in this brigade are filled by volunteers. However, given current forecasts and the ongoing influx of voluntary applications, it is expected that the ratio of compulsory assignments will reach about 100 per year.

Priority on Maintaining Operational Readiness
The German Ministry of Defense has stated that maintaining the operational readiness of the Bundeswehr is the country's top priority, and this is taken into account in all actions taken. Additionally, in all decisions, the personal interests of military personnel will be considered as much as possible. Representatives of the German Defense Committee are set to be updated on the next steps of this program on Monday.
For those affected, compulsory deployment means additional notification, and they also have the opportunity to challenge the decision in court. Alongside this, the 203rd Armored Brigade of Germany, which recently participated in the "Shield of Freedom" exercise in June, is expected to be transferred to NATO's eastern flank by the end of 2027. The commander of this brigade, Colonel Oliver Kaufmann, stated that a large number of soldiers in his brigade are voluntarily ready to serve in Lithuania.
According to available statistics, the fill rate of forces stationed in Lithuania is about 92 percent. These forces include a multinational group that has been stationed in the region since 2017. The 203rd Armored Brigade and the 122nd Armored Brigade are not expected to be transferred to Lithuania until 2027. According to published information, about 40 percent of the personnel required for these units are still not secured.
