Andris Kulbergz, the Prime Minister of Latvia, stated in an interview with the media that the European Union is finally paying attention to the warnings from the Baltic countries regarding security threats from Russia. These remarks came following a recent attack in which a Russian drone struck a passenger train near the Polish border. This incident occurred particularly as EU officials are deeply concerned about the escalation of hostile Russian activities on European soil.
The Experience of the Baltic Countries and the Necessity for Serious Actions
Kulbergz further stated that the Baltic countries have long warned about these threats, and it now seems that their voices are being heard in Brussels. He added, "We were right, weren't we? We had told everyone that such an event would happen." This Prime Minister, referring to the long history of occupation of the Baltic countries by Russia, pointed to these countries' ability to identify Moscow's hostile behaviors and said, "We know this bear inside out."

The Need for Investment in Security and Defense
Kulbergz emphasized that the European Union must have a new understanding of security threats and turn this understanding into tangible actions. He added, "Those who prepare for the worst-case scenario will be at peace." The Prime Minister of Latvia pointed out that the country is currently investing more than its share in defense spending and said, "We are increasing our debt to invest in security." He called for increased production and a focus on military industries at the European level.
The Challenges of Supporting Ukraine and Its Impact on European Security
Kulbergz also stressed the necessity of supporting Ukraine and said that Brussels must make more decisive decisions in this regard. He added, "Ukraine is the target of ballistic missile attacks, and Russia is producing more of these missiles that contain Western components." These concerns have particularly increased following the confirmation from Vladislav Vlasiuk, the head of sanctions policy in the Office of the President of Ukraine. He warned that Russian ballistic missiles contain recycled Western components, and this supply chain must be cut off.
Kulbergz pointed to the need for a complete ban on the use of Western technology components in Russian missiles and called for effective sanctions in this area. He emphasized that these actions are vital for cutting off the supply chain. The Prime Minister of Latvia also highlighted the importance of public awareness in Europe regarding the dangers posed by Russia and said, "People need to hear the truth, and unpleasant news should not be hidden from them."
