The United States government, led by Donald Trump, announced that Ukraine and Russia have reached an agreement to halt attacks on energy targets. Trump referenced the agreement between the two parties in a post on his social media, stating: "Ukraine has agreed not to attack Russian energy targets, and Russia will act similarly!" These remarks come as energy prices have sharply increased due to ongoing tensions in Ukraine and the Middle East.

Impact of the Ukraine War on Energy Prices

Trump further added that the rise in global diesel prices is primarily due to the Ukraine and Russia war, not tensions in Iran. Meanwhile, Volodymyr Zelensky, the President of Ukraine, has stated that no official agreement has been confirmed, but Ukraine has suggested encouraging its partners to secure an agreement with Russia to prevent the destruction of vital infrastructure.

Ukraine's Response to Proposals

Zelensky also stated: "If our partners are ready to ensure that Russia truly refrains from attacking our power system and other energy infrastructures, we are also ready to create a mutual halt in our attacks." This comes as Ukraine has increased its attacks on Russian energy facilities in recent months.

The wars in both regions, Ukraine and the Middle East, have significantly impacted global energy markets. However, experts believe that the war in the Middle East has had a greater impact on global oil supply due to the closure of the Strait of Hormuz and attacks on maritime fleets.

Since the onset of hostilities in Ukraine in February 2022, oil prices have surged, leading to increased fuel costs in the United States and other European countries. The rise in prices has drawn attention as a sensitive issue ahead of the midterm elections in November.

Meanwhile, Gavin Newsom, the Governor of California, has criticized U.S. energy officials regarding the price increases and has called for accountability. He wrote in a post on social media platform X: "Everyone knew that Trump's war in Iran would disrupt the Strait of Hormuz and increase costs. So why did the Department of Energy take no action?"
