The closure of educational classes in Tunisia due to heavy rainfall and flooding in more than one area has raised new concerns about urban infrastructure and preparedness for severe weather conditions. The General Directorate of the Tunis Governorate announced that due to the forecast of rainfall between 30 to 50 millimeters in a short period, all afternoon classes in schools, educational institutions, and universities have been suspended.

With the rainfall, streets and sidewalks quickly became submerged, forcing residents to wade through floodwaters. Cars and buses faced serious difficulties, with some vehicles trapped in the water. In historic neighborhoods, residents took refuge in shelters such as shops and under awnings to stay safe from the flooding that engulfed the narrow streets.

Consequences of Flooding and Infrastructure Issues
This storm also caused power and internet outages in various areas, and water infiltrated some homes. Images shared on social media showed electrical fires due to the heavy rainfall. The recent rains followed a summer marked by prolonged heatwaves and came after a year filled with recurrent flooding. In January, at least five people lost their lives due to the heaviest rainfall in Tunisia in over seven decades.
The recent floods once again highlighted the pressures caused by heavy rainfall on Tunisia's infrastructure, especially after long periods of heat. This situation has made the need to review and strengthen infrastructure against climate change and severe weather conditions critically urgent.
