The discovery of a new wild cat species named Tilcayo Cat (Leopardus tilcayo) in Bolivia marks a milestone in environmental research and biodiversity. This small species, with a spotted coat resembling that of a leopard, has been identified for the first time in over 100 years. Researchers identified this cat in the mountainous region of Yang near La Paz, the capital of Bolivia. Initially, local residents who observed the animal thought it was a domestic cat, but DNA tests revealed that this animal is indeed unique in its class.

Details of the Tilcayo Cat Discovery

Paula Nogales-Ascaron, a biologist and National Geographic explorer who was part of the research team, described this discovery as an "amazing event." The last wild cat species described was in 1923, indicating that this discovery is remarkably significant in the history of animal biodiversity science. The name "Tilcayo," given to the animal by local residents, inspired its new scientific name. The size of this cat is approximately 45 centimeters (18 inches) and it has round ears.

Status and Threats to the Species

Currently, only two samples of the Tilcayo Cat have been identified, one of which lives in an animal shelter in Yangas, and the other was released after being attacked by local residents in the forest. Nogales-Ascaron noted that this species is currently classified as "vulnerable" and is at risk of extinction, and could soon be "at greater risk" of disappearing. These cats are still not well known, and there is little information about their diet, natural predators, and breeding methods in the wild.

Researchers hope that the methods used to identify this new cat can assist in identifying other cat species around the world and provide appropriate conservation strategies. Cats are recognized as environmental warriors, as they have a profound impact on nature, and their presence in protected habitats can help reduce carbon dioxide levels.
