With record high temperatures in over a century, Barcelona has clearly felt the need for climate-resilient infrastructure. The high temperatures of the Mediterranean waters, which are warming about 20% faster than the global average, have led to stronger storms, rising sea levels, and coastal erosion, making this issue even more critical, especially after the collapse of part of a boardwalk in 2023.
A project for coastal restoration
Barcelona's mayor, Jaume Collboni, has stated: "Cities like ours must learn to live with climate change while also protecting our places and communities." This Spanish city has recently been nominated for The Earthshot Prize in the category of "Ocean Restoration." Barcelona is set to invest 150 million euros to restore one of Europe's most utilized urban beaches.

Developing climate-resilient infrastructure
This project includes the creation of 22 hectares of climate-resilient public space along the Sant Martin coastline. This coastal area is designed to incorporate restored marine habitats and natural coastal protection along with access to water features. The goal of this project is to create a model for other coastal cities around the world facing serious challenges such as rising sea levels, severe storms, and loss of biodiversity.
Upon completion of this project in spring 2027, Barcelona will continue to create sustainable and high-quality beaches that will contribute to improved air quality and biodiversity. Additionally, the plan includes the establishment of a linear park covering 15,000 square meters, walking and cycling paths along the beaches, allowing tourists to enjoy public space.
Barcelona is particularly positioned as a positive example in addressing environmental challenges in this competition. The mayor of Barcelona has emphasized: "These structures are designed to be safe against climate change while also being accessible for everyone's enjoyment."
