Europe was recognized as the "hottest place on Earth" with unusually high temperatures in summer 2026. According to a new analysis, over 1.5 billion people worldwide faced temperature hazards, and nearly 90% of Europeans experienced a month of "dangerous heat." This situation is seen as a sign of climate change and the urgent need for a transformation in energy resources.
Heat Hazards and Climate Change
Research shows that temperatures exceeding 90% of local averages from 1991 to 2020 are defined as "dangerous heat." This summer, 203 countries experienced at least 30 days of such heat, among which 54 countries recorded their hottest summer. France tops this list with 3.5 degrees Celsius above the historical average.

Warnings and Consequences
Christian Dahl from Climate Central emphasized that this summer is a sign of a critical situation that we cannot ignore. The human and economic costs of fossil fuels are clearly emerging, and the need to shift to clean energy has never been more apparent. Simon Steele, Executive Secretary of the UN Climate Change Convention, also stressed the need for a rapid transition from fossil fuels to clean energy, calling them "cheaper and safer."
Findings indicate that Europe's hot summer is part of a broader trend. Predictions suggest that it is no longer possible to keep global temperatures below 1.5 degrees Celsius, a legal threshold established in the Paris Agreement in 2015. According to the UN Environment Programme report, the best-case scenario is a 1.8-degree warming, while other scenarios predict even higher than 2 degrees.
The transition to clean energy has been identified as a key solution to mitigate the negative effects of climate change. In 2025, renewable energy accounted for nearly 34% of global electricity, which needs to increase to 60 to 70% by 2030. Last year, for the first time, electricity generation from wind and solar in the European Union surpassed fossil fuels, marking progress towards clean energy.
Despite unprecedented investments in clean energy, these sources still cover only about 40% of the increased demand. The intense demand for energy, especially due to the use of air conditioning systems and the rapid growth of artificial intelligence, has surged significantly. Energy consumption in data centers is expected to rise by 17% in 2025 and is projected to double by 2030.
Meanwhile, Europe's aging power grids are unable to meet this increased demand, leading to significant amounts of solar and wind energy being wasted. While energy storage systems can help address this issue, experts warn that the necessary investments in this area are still insufficient.
