Severe flooding in the city of Torrent, located in the Horta Sud region of Spain, caused significant damage to streets and urban infrastructure. This incident, which occurred following heavy rainfall after the hottest recorded summer in Spain, resulted in several damaged vehicles and many residents being forced to quickly evacuate their areas.
Damage and Emergency Actions
In this incident, 15 residents of Torrent who were trapped in a fast food restaurant were rescued by emergency teams. The rainfall in this area caused street and basement flooding, putting residents at risk. According to residents, such floods have occurred in this area before, and they criticized the lack of structural measures to prevent it.

Criticism of the Emergency Alert System
Local residents also criticized the timing of the emergency alert sent by the ES-Alert system. This alert, which was sent at 10:08 PM by the regional emergency center, advised people to avoid traveling and steer clear of dangerous areas. However, many residents stated that this alert was sent after the streets and basements had already filled with water.
The rainfall on that day reached 96 liters per square meter, with 71 liters recorded in just 30 minutes, described as "excessively torrential" rain. Surrounding areas, including the Barranco del Poya Valley, were also affected, although the water did not exceed its limits in those areas. Rescue teams are still in the process of clearing roads and damaged vehicles.
This incident serves as a serious warning not only for the residents of Torrent but also for Spanish citizens in general, clearly highlighting the need for better planning and more effective structural measures to cope with natural disasters. In this regard, attention to climate change and its effects on infrastructure must be prioritized to prevent similar crises in the future.
