The disruption in the Dutch rail network caused widespread suspension of rail travel on Tuesday, coinciding with the annual budget ceremony of the country. Authorities assessed this event as organized sabotage after discovering pipes attached to the tracks at around 20 locations.
Details of the Sabotage
The rail infrastructure company ProRail announced that objects were deliberately placed at various locations on the tracks, causing extensive disruptions in the rail circuit systems. ProRail emphasized in a statement: "Materials were found at several points on the rail that had been intentionally placed there. This caused disruptions in various sections and it appears that sabotage was involved in this incident."

Impact on Rail Travel and Road Traffic
These objects caused the signaling systems to identify the affected sections as occupied, leading to the halt of all trains in these areas, regardless of whether a train was currently present there or not. Disruptions began at 5:30 AM (CET) and had the most impact on the Amersfoort–Zwolle, Utrecht–Arnhem, Arnhem–Zutphen, and Zwolle–Leeuwarden routes. The Dutch National Railway Company (NS) also reported severe delays in the Zwolle, Deventer, and Amersfoort areas during the busy morning hours.
In one incident, a train collided with one of the pipes near Steenwijk in Overijssel, but ProRail confirmed that no one was injured. Additionally, disruptions in road traffic also occurred due to the improper functioning of level crossings in the affected areas.
The date of these disruptions coincides with budget day, or Prinsjesdag, when the king traditionally holds a ceremony among a large crowd in The Hague. Authorities have not yet confirmed any connection between the two events.
Annet Bertram, the Deputy Minister of Infrastructure and Water Management, expressed deep concern over the situation and called for a comprehensive investigation into the matter. The Dutch National Police is also leading this investigation, and no group has yet claimed responsibility for the sabotage. ProRail has also stated that it does not yet know who carried out this attack and why.
