Sebastian Coe, the President of World Athletics, reiterated the organization's stance on continuing the ban on Russian athletes in an interview, stating: "We will stand by our position and defend it." These remarks come in light of recent changes in the policies of the International Olympic Committee and other sports federations.

Legal and Sports Implications

The Russian Athletics Federation has filed two appeals to the Court of Arbitration for Sport in Lausanne (CAS) against this decision, claiming that the ban harms the fundamental interests of athletics in Russia and restricts the rights of Russian athletes to compete. A group of Russian athletes has also approached the human rights commissions of the IOC and the United Nations, stating that this ban violates their rights and harms their careers.

Strong Stance of the Athletics Federation

In response to criticism and legal pressures from Russia, Coe emphasized that this is a philosophical issue, not a personal one. He said: "We are fighting for the integrity of competition and the integrity of competitors, and it is the right of an international federation to decide on the conditions of eligibility." This stance has been taken while other federations such as wrestling and judo have reduced similar restrictions.

Coe's Legacy in World Athletics

Sebastian Coe, recognized as one of Britain's Olympic champions, stated during the World Athletics Championships in Budapest that this event will be one of his most significant legacies. He expressed: "We are changing the perception of sports and want this competition to feel and look different. The cash prizes for this event are significantly higher than ever, amounting to $10 million."

As he approaches the end of his presidency in 2027, he reflected on his achievements and noted that the athletics federation now has one of the best management performances in the Olympic movement. He highlighted the efforts made to maintain governance and transparency in elections and anti-doping programs and emphasized the importance of ensuring gender equality in the sport.
