The United States Congress took a significant step on Wednesday by passing a new package of sanctions against Russia, increasing pressure on Moscow. These sanctions, which will soon be signed by President Donald Trump, represent the largest legal action by the U.S. against Russia since Trump returned to the White House.
Details of the Sanctions
This sanctions package was approved by a vote of 262 to 159 in the House of Representatives and had previously faced a decisive approval of 86 to 11 in the Senate. The sanctions focus on Russia's energy and defense industries, Vladimir Putin, and senior officials around him, and also address existing restrictions on the fleet of oil tankers that Russia uses to circumvent Western sanctions.

Global Impacts and Reactions
One important aspect of this law is granting Trump the power to impose tariffs of up to 100 percent on countries that continue to purchase large volumes of Russian oil and gas. This action particularly targets China and India, two countries that remain among the largest buyers of Russian energy. However, some Democrats in Washington have protested this issue and called for a reduction in the President's trade powers.
Gregory Meeks, a senior member of the House Foreign Affairs Committee, criticized the way this law was drafted, stating that prioritizing the President's tariff powers over sanctions commitments raises doubts. Despite these criticisms, the majority of Democrats ultimately voted in favor of the law.
Meanwhile, in Ukraine, Russian airstrikes on civilian areas in the south of the country have intensified calls from Ukraine supporters for the passage of these sanctions. Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky directly urged Congress to pass these sanctions, believing that sustained economic pressure should push Moscow towards negotiations.
While Ukraine has welcomed the passage of this law, India has announced that it will continue to purchase Russian oil and is seeking to diversify its sources and adapt to market changes. India's strategic and military relations with Russia complicate Washington's efforts to economically isolate Moscow.
