This demonstration started at OpenAI's headquarters in Mission Bay and moved to Anthropic's offices at 500 Howard Street, ultimately concluding at City Hall. Protesters urged Mayor Daniel Lurie and the Board of Supervisors to declare a local state of emergency regarding AI.
Call to Halt AI Development
The organizers of this demonstration called for a stop to the development of powerful AI systems until stronger safeguards and international regulations are in place. They also emphasized the need for a global treaty to limit the capabilities of advanced AI and enforce safety standards.

Concerns About the Future of AI
Protesters came out with signs warning about uncontrolled AI. They wrote messages like "Extinction is on the table" in chalk on the sidewalk and urged OpenAI and Anthropic employees to leave their jobs and advocate for agreed-upon international limits.
Mikhail Tarazi, one of the organizers of "Stop the AI Race," stated that industry leaders had previously asked the U.S. government to regulate AI but had faced indifference. Hunter Glenn, another organizer, expressed concern about the potential risks of AI to human survival and stressed that AI safety should be treated as a bipartisan issue.
This demonstration coincided with new discussions about AI safety, especially after OpenAI revealed six instances of "unexpected or concerning" behavior from its models. Participants also expressed worries about the increased energy consumption of data centers and its potential environmental impacts.
The gathering took place as the Dreamforce conference attracted around 43,000 people to San Francisco, featuring speakers from OpenAI, Anthropic, and Nvidia. Along the route, protesters also passed a Waymo self-driving vehicle, highlighting the growing presence of AI in everyday life.
