Recent research has shown that individuals' living environments can have significant impacts on their brain health. In this study published in the prestigious journal Radiology, researchers analyzed nearly 3,000 brain MRI scans of individuals aged 18 to 96. They compared brain sizes with a regional deprivation index (Area Deprivation Index) determined by factors such as income, education, employment, and housing.
Effects of Living Environment on Brain Health
The results of this research indicate that individuals living in more deprived neighborhoods have a higher "brain age" and smaller total brain volume compared to those living in better-off areas. John-Paul G. Yu, one of the researchers of this study, states: "Your living environment has a significant impact on your brain." He added that an individual's living environment has "clear and measurable consequences for brain age and, indirectly, brain health." These findings add to the evidence that the conditions in which individuals are born, live, work, and age can affect their long-term neurological health.

Health Consequences of Deprivation
Researchers also found that a greater volume of white matter hyperintensities, which are visible bright spots on MRI scans associated with damage to small blood vessels in the brain, exists in individuals living in deprived neighborhoods. Yu noted that "white matter hyperintensities are actually signs of vascular damage in the brain" and pointed to factors such as high blood pressure, poor sleep, and chronic stress that can over time affect blood flow to the brain.
A higher volume of white matter hyperintensities is associated with an increased risk of memory loss, cognitive problems, and dementia. Yu emphasized that neighborhood deprivation should be considered in the design of health interventions and public policies. He stated: "Neighborhood deprivation, measured by indices such as ADI, is an important determinant because it reflects accumulated structural inequalities that go beyond individual behaviors and lead to disparities in clinical outcomes."
