Germany will soon begin measures to exert more pressure on nearly half a million Syrian refugees. This plan, designed to review the protective statuses of Syrian refugees in the country, could significantly increase the number of individuals forced to leave Germany.
Details of the new plan by the German Ministry of the Interior
Alexander Dobrindt, the German Minister of the Interior, intends to instruct the Federal Office for Migration and Refugees (BAMF) to revoke the protective statuses of many Syrian refugees. This order will be issued after the state parliament elections in Mecklenburg-Vorpommern and the Berlin House of Representatives next Sunday. The aim of these actions is to compel refugees to leave Germany.

According to the Federal Statistical Office of Germany, as of July 31, 2026, 912,386 Syrian citizens were living in Germany. However, by the end of December 2025, this number had decreased to 936,300, indicating a 4 percent decline. This decrease is primarily due to Syrian refugees obtaining German citizenship.
Consequences and concerns regarding the status of refugees
The German government is seeking to encourage Syrians to return to their country with this action, as voluntary returns to Syria have been severely limited since the fall of Bashar al-Assad's regime. According to statistics from the German Ministry of the Interior, fewer than 10,000 Syrians have returned voluntarily to Syria so far.
Additionally, the website MedianDienst Integration reports that from December 2024 to July 2026, 14,182 Syrian citizens have left Germany. Of these, about half have utilized the German Foreign Ministry's voluntary return program. This program covers the cost of return travel and provides a travel allowance of 200 euros for each adult and 100 euros for each child.
However, surveys indicate that many Syrian refugees are reluctant to return to their home country. In the latest survey, 94 percent of Syrian refugees stated that they want to stay permanently in Germany. This statistic reflects the serious challenges that Syrian refugees face.
The unemployment rate among Syrian refugees in Germany is about 31.4 percent, which is higher than the average for refugees from other countries. The reasons for this high rate include low participation of Syrian women in the labor market and challenges in cultural and social integration. Nevertheless, about 80,000 Syrians are employed in jobs facing labor shortages.
Ultimately, experts believe that revoking protective statuses simultaneously and extensively will be difficult, but the number of Syrian refugees required to leave Germany is expected to rise rapidly. These developments could have serious consequences for the refugee community in Germany and also for the country's international relations.
