Belarus has recently started a four-day military exercise near its borders with Poland and Lithuania. The Belarusian Ministry of Defense has announced that these exercises include mechanized battalions and tanks, and the forces are being trained in various areas such as border protection, counter-sabotage operations, and defense against drone and light aircraft attacks.
Importance of the Exercise Location
The location of these exercises is of particular importance. Some of the exercises are being held near "Suwałki Gap," which is a narrow corridor between Poland and Lithuania and is considered a sensitive strategic point by NATO. The training areas include the Hoża training grounds near the Lithuanian border and the Brzeziński and Rozański slopes, which are approximately 15 and 60 kilometers from the Polish border, respectively.

Concerns About NATO Security
The Suwałki Gap is considered one of the most sensitive areas in terms of security in this part of Europe. This 104-kilometer border between Poland and Lithuania provides a land link between the Baltic states and other NATO members, while separating Belarus from the Russian exclave of Kaliningrad. However, Belarusian officials emphasized that there is no reason for concern and that these exercises are described as "entirely defensive."
Belarusian officials also stated that the number of participants and the amount of weapons used do not exceed the thresholds set in the 2011 Vienna Document. However, no specific information has been provided regarding the number of soldiers participating in these exercises.
Consequences of the Ukraine War
These exercises are part of broader efforts to test the readiness of the Belarusian armed forces. Alexander Lukashenko, the leader of Belarus, visited the Obuz-Lesnovsky training ground near Baranovichi on September 11 and declared his aim to assess the performance of the entire national security sector. Belarus has been conducting military exercises near NATO borders for years, and in the past, Russian forces have also participated in these exercises.
The current situation, of course, adds new dimensions to these activities. Belarus is considered one of Russia's closest allies, and in February 2022, Minsk officials allowed Russian forces to use Belarusian infrastructure and territory to conduct operations against Ukraine. However, Belarus has not deployed its armed forces in direct conflict on Ukrainian soil.
