Judge Christopher Cooper stated in his recent ruling that "advocates cannot install memorials for President Trump or any other person or thing at the Kennedy Center without congressional approval." In response to this ruling, Trump stated that the $257 million (approximately €223 million) allocated by Congress for renovations at this center would only be released if permission for the name change is granted. Meanwhile, federal courts have previously concluded that changing the name without congressional approval is not possible.
Financial Issues and the Future of the Kennedy Center
Judge Cooper's ruling in May of this year emphasized that the Kennedy Center had illegally added Trump's name to the building and ordered that his name be removed. Officials at the institution complied with this order in June, but scaffolding and barriers remain at the site of Trump's removed name. The Department of Justice has also appealed this new ruling.
Trump, who was appointed as the chairman of the Kennedy Center last year, participated in a virtual board meeting and announced that he had donated $17 million to a foundation to support this institution. During this meeting, heated exchanges and arguments occurred between Trump and Ohio Democratic representative Joyce Beatty, who leads the efforts to prevent a Trump memorial at the Kennedy Center.

Brian Ballard, a board member of the Kennedy Center, stated, "This building is currently not constructed to endure; the chairman knows this because he is one of the best builders in the world."
Trump's insistence on the physical recognition of his works, reminiscent of his desire to add his name to buildings as a real estate developer, has always been a point of contention. This issue is the latest obstacle in Trump's efforts to significantly reshape the capital of the United States in his own style. He is demolishing the east wing of the White House and replacing it with a ballroom, and he also has plans to build a victory arch near the Arlington National Cemetery. Trump is also eyeing the renovation of a golf course along the Potomac River.
The Kennedy Center board voted in August to install Trump's name on the center's facade, stating: "John F. Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts, restored and renovated by President Donald J. Trump." If Trump's financial contribution to the Kennedy Center reaches $100 million (approximately €86.66 million), another inscription titled "Founded by the Trump Kennedy Foundation" will also be added. Additionally, the square in front of the Kennedy Center will be renamed after Trump.
There are concerns that the administration may seek to demolish the Kennedy Center. According to a filing made last month, government lawyers informed the court that without the recognition of the president, the Kennedy Center would struggle to raise funds for renovations. Without this money, they suggested that the building might need to be demolished.
