The Spanish National Research Council (CSIC) has inaugurated a new quantum nanofabrication area in Barcelona with the goal of strengthening research infrastructure in the field of quantum technologies. This center is recognized as the largest research infrastructure of its kind in Spain, allowing researchers and companies to produce and analyze nanoscale devices and circuits for the development of advanced quantum technologies and microelectronics.
Investment and Advanced Equipment
This facility has been established with an investment of over six million euros and has been funded through financial schemes such as the PERTE Chip and the complementary quantum communications program. The area includes advanced equipment, including an electron lithography system that is unique in Spain, as well as microscopes and metrology tools capable of inspecting nanometric structures. This equipment will assist researchers in designing, producing, and prototyping technologies that can be utilized in various fields including quantum computing, communications, healthcare, energy, and security.

New Center for Quantum Sciences and Technologies
CSIC has also announced the establishment of a new Center for Quantum Sciences and Technologies (QuARC-CSIC). This center has been created to gather research groups from various CSIC institutions, aiming to promote advanced research, attract talent, and strengthen collaboration with other groups in Spain and abroad. Eloisa del Pino, President of CSIC, introduced the quantum science and technology strategy and emphasized the need for a new organizational model to strengthen Spain's quantum ecosystem.
Del Pino stated that the development of quantum technologies is rapidly advancing globally, with strategic investments in Europe, the United States, and China forming an increasingly competitive ecosystem. She believes that QuARC-CSIC provides an opportunity to create a sustainable and leading structure in this field, especially as this entity prepares for what is termed the "third quantum revolution": the transition from laboratory experiments to the integration of these technologies into industry and society.
Development of International Collaborations
This new center will be located in Madrid at the former Cajal Institute and will focus on consolidating existing CSIC capabilities in quantum sciences. The center will be strengthened to create favorable conditions for interaction among researchers and attract new talent through competitive selection processes. These actions will enable CSIC to act as a hub for research, education, and collaboration with other centers.
With the opening of this infrastructure and new center, Spain seeks to enhance its capabilities in semiconductors and quantum technologies and aims to improve its role in the international arena of these innovative technologies.
