The European Union Digital Identity Wallet (EUDI Wallet) is being launched with the aim of simplifying personal administrative processes for citizens, residents, and businesses in the member countries of the union. This program, which will be operational by the end of this calendar year, provides a private space for storing and sharing personal documents and enables access to public and private services digitally.
Functionality of the Digital Identity Wallet
The digital identity wallet is a free application that users can download on their mobile devices. This program allows users to have more control over their personal data instead of relying on large technology storage systems like Apple and Google Wallet. Additionally, each EU member state must create its own specific digital wallet, while these applications must adhere to the same technical standards so that users can access various services anywhere in Europe.

Benefits and Challenges
The digital identity wallet is part of the eIDAS 2.0 regulations aimed at creating a single digital market for electronic identification. This application allows users to keep their important documents in a private digital space. These documents can include official documents such as national ID cards, medical records, university diplomas, and even flight tickets. Users can share their documents with government and private entities online and offline through this wallet.
However, integrating such a large volume of sensitive information into a digital system also poses risks. According to Thomas Lohninger, executive director of the NGO epicenter, if all information is stored in one basket, any technical failure or hack could threaten access to all sensitive information. There are also concerns about privacy and control over data, especially regarding what privacy advocates call “over-identification.”
For example, this wallet could be designed in such a way that valid identifications are easily and cheaply accessible, which may lead organizations to request identification even in cases where it was previously unnecessary. This could jeopardize individuals' privacy and force them to provide more information than necessary.
Ultimately, how each member state handles data storage will significantly impact the security and privacy of users. Decentralized structures, where all documents are exclusively stored on secure hardware chips of smartphones, are considered the best option for maintaining privacy. In contrast, cloud-based options or central servers may pose potential risks from hackers.
