Hackers targeted hundreds of European customers of the digital bank Revolut by impersonating a government agency and stole their personal information. Revolut stated in a statement that this attack was part of a "complex foreign identity fraud" in which an unauthorized person used an email address belonging to a real government agency to send fraudulent requests for customer information.
Details of the Attack
According to reports, this attack was carried out by Italian hackers who used a compromised Italian government email account to send requests for customer information as official representatives. The hackers managed to access information including customer addresses, identity verification photos, identification documents, and Bitcoin-related information. According to an informed source, about 680 Revolut customers in several European countries were affected by this attack.

Revolut's Preventive Measures
Revolut is a British company, but its banking operations are legally established and licensed in Lithuania, with over 50 million customers across Europe. The company stated that its systems and customer funds were "unaffected" and that it has informed and provided necessary support to those affected. After identifying the attack, Revolut immediately blocked the targeted address and notified the relevant government agencies.
The UK data protection office, the Information Commissioner's Office, has confirmed that it has received a report regarding this incident and is evaluating the information provided.
Expansion of Revolut's Activities
This incident occurs as Revolut is continuously expanding into the global banking sector. Founded in 2015 as a fintech startup, the company recently achieved a valuation of $115 billion (€98.7 billion) in a secondary share sale in July. Revolut obtained its long-awaited banking license in its home market of the UK in March and received a full banking license in France in August. This month, the company also obtained conditional approval for a banking license in the United States and registered a banking license application in Switzerland on Tuesday.
Initially, Revolut built its business around currency exchange and smartphone-based money transfers and has since expanded into a broader range of financial services. Now, the company has over 80 million customers globally and aims to reach 100 million customers in 100 countries.
