Yemen is witnessing a new wave of population displacement following an escalation of clashes between Houthi rebels and Saudi-backed forces. In this situation, families are fleeing their homes in Taiz province and seeking refuge in temporary camps. On Tuesday, September 15, those fleeing from combat zones arrived at these camps with their meager belongings, and some of them began constructing shelters from wood and plastic bags.
High Number of Displacements and Critical Conditions
The United Nations Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs (OCHA) announced that since the beginning of September, at least 125,000 people have been newly displaced across Yemen, with tens of thousands displaced in Taiz province alone. This widespread displacement occurs as the ceasefire, which had largely halted the civil war since 2022, has come to an end.

The World Health Organization and other UN-affiliated agencies have reported that over 500 people have been killed in the past week due to the clashes, while this figure was nearly 200 the previous week. Additionally, OCHA confirmed 40 civilian casualties between September 1 and 14, including eight deaths.
Pressure on Taiz Province and Challenges in Humanitarian Aid
Taiz province, as one of the main areas of displacement, is facing increased pressure from a more severe humanitarian crisis. Humanitarian efforts are encountering serious obstacles due to damaged roads, restricted access, and funding shortages. As a result, living conditions for those who have sought refuge in these areas have become extremely difficult.
Given this situation, the international community and European countries need to pay more attention to the crisis in Yemen and its urgent humanitarian needs. Supporting humanitarian efforts and providing necessary funding can help alleviate the suffering of the people of Yemen while also contributing to stability and peace in this war-torn country.
