The Houthis (Ansar Allah) seized the large and small Hanish islands in the southern Red Sea of Yemen on Monday, reinforcing their control over an important maritime route. This new seizure is linked to increasing pressure on global oil prices and its potential impact on energy security in Europe.
Strategic Importance of Bab el-Mandeb Strait
The Hanish islands are located 160 kilometers north of the Bab el-Mandeb Strait, which is a key point for the passage of oil tankers. Given the critical situation in the Strait of Hormuz and disruptions in oil transport, the Bab el-Mandeb Strait has become a sensitive point. This strait serves as a route connecting the Indian Ocean with the Red Sea and has become even more significant during the Iran-U.S. conflict.

In the past two months, the Houthis have increased their attacks on Saudi Arabia's oil infrastructure and commercial ships in the Red Sea.
