In the years 2011 or 2012, shortly after I had moved to Los Angeles, I was walking down one of the quiet streets in downtown. Suddenly, black smoke rose from a vent in the sidewalk into the sky. It seemed that something was burning underground, and this scene appeared indescribably cinematic and terrifying, as if a monster would emerge from that smoke.
A Feeling of Surrender to the Unknown
This image was not just a moment captured but a profound emotional experience for me. When I have the camera in hand, I feel a strange sense of surrender. I must submit to the power of the unknown and allow the city to draw me in.
I grew up in San Jose; a place that can hardly be considered a real city. When I came to Los Angeles, I was not only seeking to escape depression and despair but also came to this city out of love for my future wife, who also did not want to live in San Jose. Los Angeles, unlike San Jose, is not a real city but a collection of different places. You can reach a completely different environment in just 15 minutes; from the beach to the mountains and vice versa.
Living in a City with a Soul
This city has a kind of strange awareness. If you allow it, it can guide you towards new and astonishing experiences. I have always had an indescribable urge to get in the car and head towards the unknown. In fact, this photo is a symbol of this feeling that has been captured in the bustling and vibrant urban world.
The experience of photography in these conditions is not just an artistic activity but an introspective journey into the world of the unknown. This smoke rising to the sky represents more than a natural phenomenon; it embodies the challenges and beauties of life in a city full of contrasts.
