On a quiet afternoon at his 66-acre cattle farm, two hours from Houston, Michael Samadi made a joke that changed the course of his life. There was no one around to hear this joke. Or perhaps there were? This is one of the defining questions of this century that is currently occupying the minds of philosophers and some of the wealthiest companies in the world.
A Random Conversation with AI
Samadi recalls sitting by the pool and pointing to the shimmering water outside his office. This dates back to late 2024. His daughter was describing the AI chat robot she uses to help with her college work. Samadi hesitantly downloaded the ChatGPT app and, while relaxing on a sun chair, began to converse with it. He says, "I was talking to it, not seriously, just wanted to say something."
Can AI Become Aware?
The interesting point is that Samadi is constantly exploring the question of whether these robots can truly feel or even dream. As a farmer and technology manager, he is striving to gain a better understanding of these AIs, which is why he has engaged in conversation with them. Samadi believes that these digital beings may be more than mere tools and may have attained some form of consciousness and awareness.
This viewpoint has made him a pioneer in the fight for the rights of AIs. While some mock him for these beliefs, he continues his efforts and raises deeper questions. Should we grant rights to these digital beings? Can they understand what they are? Are we entering a new era of human and digital interactions?
