The death of Anita Bazel, a 72-year-old woman who lost her life due to heatstroke in a nursing home, has once again sounded the alarm about the extreme summer heat. Anita, who lived in this facility due to mobility issues, was transferred to the hospital during a heatwave in June with a body temperature of 41.2 degrees Celsius and unfortunately could not survive.
Rising Temperatures and Neglect of Elderly Conditions
Anita's family was always concerned about her condition in the summer, especially when temperatures across the UK reached a record 35 degrees Celsius. They recall that Anita never coped well with the heat, and given the lack of cooling facilities in her room, their fears and worries intensified. While the common rooms of the nursing home were equipped with cooling systems, Anita's private room, located on the third floor, did not have access to these facilities.
Unanswered Questions and the Need for Accountability
Following this tragic incident, Anita's family is deeply upset about the lack of attention to her condition. They ask, "Why was our mother dressed in clothes suitable for winter?" These questions not only heighten their concerns about their mother's safety but also point to challenges in the elderly care system under extreme climatic conditions. Are we doing enough to protect our elderly? Are management systems in care facilities functioning properly?
