Charles Michel, President of the European Council, criticized Ursula von der Leyen, President of the European Commission, blaming her for the slow decision-making necessary to address the current challenges facing the European Union (EU). These remarks were made ahead of von der Leyen's annual speech to the European Parliament in Strasbourg, where she will outline her vision and priorities for the coming year.
Complex challenges and unfulfilled promises
Michel expressed that the European Union is currently facing complex challenges, including the war on European soil and increasing competition with China and the United States. He said, "We must focus on the main issues, and these issues are not just about communications or new initiatives. The Commission has launched 400 initiatives in recent years, but where are the results and improvements? When I meet with entrepreneurs, they are frustrated because they feel there is no sense of urgency."

Overregulation and lack of progress
Michel believes that overregulation in the European Union has weakened the competitiveness of the institution. He emphasized, "Is the European Union a better place for investment and innovation? We are witnessing an increase in regulations and overregulation." He pointed to the lack of progress in areas like the Capital Markets Union, which is recognized as a key pillar for strengthening competitiveness. Michel stated, "This issue has made us weaker in the current situation."
While Michel acknowledged that this issue is not solely von der Leyen's responsibility, he emphasized her accountability, saying, "There is no doubt that she is very slow in her decision-making. I feel there is a lack of focus on what is important."
The impact of the approach on relations with the United States
Michel also criticized von der Leyen's approach to interactions with the United States during Donald Trump's presidency, attributing it to jeopardizing Europe's security. He criticized the "Turnberry" trade agreement signed last summer between the EU and the United States, which some consider unbalanced. He said, "I feel she has made the decision to blindly follow the United States, even when this action harms the fundamental interests of the European Union."
Despite his criticisms, Michel expressed optimism, saying, "There is no alternative plan. I think it is a matter of time, and sooner or later we will have a clearer understanding that now is the time for action. This is the time to rebuild the European project, and for this, we must focus on the main issues: businesses, economic development, making life easier for entrepreneurs, and increasing investments. These are, in my opinion, key."
