When I was looking for LGBTQ+ content for children on television from the year of my birth in 1989, I stumbled upon the children's drama Two of Us. This work, directed by Roger Tonge and written by Lesley Stewart, is remarkably similar to the series Heartstopper, which was released in the 2020s, both in terms of story and the emotions it conveys. However, the reactions at that time were completely different.
Breaking Taboos
In Two of Us, one of the characters realizes that they are attracted to both genders and falls in love with another boy. This story takes place in a comprehensive school, and the characters face homosexuality and discrimination, but due to love and support for one another, they find a way to overcome these obstacles. This narrative was somewhat pioneering and managed to shift significant boundaries in its time.
The interesting point is that while this teen drama is recognized as a revolutionary work, it has almost been forgotten. While Byker Grove is known as a symbol of breaking taboos, Two of Us has remained in its shadow due to a lack of sufficient promotion and attention.
Love and Courage Against Discrimination
The characters of Two of Us face significant challenges, but their love for each other gives them the strength to overcome obstacles. This story beautifully illustrates how young people can overcome their problems through love and friendship and achieve their true identity.
Today, as media increasingly addresses LGBTQ+ issues, the values of Two of Us remain relevant and up-to-date. This story is not only a blow to taboos but also a reminder that love will always triumph.
